Shady Front Yard Planting Plan

These clients have a large Victorian in Kensington, MD with a front yard in part to full shade. We proposed a new drainage swale (small dip) to direct water away from the house and specified shade-loving, mostly native plants to provide year-round interest and seasonal blooms. Because the porch is so low, we specified small foundation shrubs and low perennials. The design was installed in Fall 2021 and these photos were taken in late spring 2022. Over the next few years, these plants will fill in and this will become a lush garden with a variety of leaf colors and textures and cheerful blooms.
